Abstract: In systems at elevated temperature the development of the microstructure of a material is controlled by diffusional and interface migration processes. As first step the description of the microstructure is reduced to a finite number of time-dependent characteristic parameters (CPs). Then the Thermodynamic Extremal Principle (TEP) is engaged to develop the evolution equations for these characteristic parameters. This treatment is demonstrated on a bamboo-structured material system predicting the spatial and time distribution of chemical composition as well as the deformation state.

Abstract: The specific material properties of shape memory alloys are due to the formation of martensitic microstructures. In this contribution, we develop a strategy to model the material behavior based on energy considerations: we first present narrow bounds to the elastic energy obtained by lamination of the multi-well problem in the monocrystalline case. These considerations are then extended to polycrystals and compared to a convexification bound. Due to the acceptably low difference between convexification lower and lamination upper bound,we use the convexification bound to establish a micromechanical model which, on the basis of physically well motivated parameters such as elastic constants and transformation strains, is able to represent a variety of aspects of the material behavior such as pseudoelasticity, pseudoplasticity and martensite reorientation.

Abstract: The topic of this contribution is the mechanical modeling of solutionprecipitation creep, a process occurring in polycrystalline and granular structures under specific temperature and pressure conditions. The model presented has a variational structure and is based on a novel proposal for the dissipation while the elastic energy is kept in the standard form. The assumed dissipation term depends on two kinds of velocities characteristic for the process: velocity of material transfer and velocity of inelastic deformations, both manifesting themselves on the boundaries of the grains. For the numerical implementation, the standard finite element program FEAP together with the pre- and postprocessing software package GID are used. The simulations are illustrated by two examples, a polycrystal with regular hexagonal microstructure and a polycrystal with random microstructure.

Abstract: We develop a micromechanical model which is suitable for any single-crystalline material which undergoes diffusionless solid-to-solid phase transitions. It is based on the specification of a microstructure accompanied by a perturbation of the local displacement-field which allows for a relaxation of the internal energy within a representative volume element. The main feature of our model is the distinction of internal variables into elastic and dissipative variables. They are treated by means of energy minimization and evolution laws, respectively. Applications are given in the context of material-point computations and two-dimensional finite-elements analysis.

Abstract: We study the evolution of systems described by internal variables. After the introduction of thermodynamic forces and fluxes, both the dissipation and dissipation potential are defined. Then, the principle of maximum dissipation (PMD) and a minimum principle for the dissipation potential are developed in a variational formulation. Both principles are related to each other. Several cases are shown where both principles lead to the same evolution equations for the internal variables. However, also counterexamples are reported where such an equivalence is not valid. In this case, an extended PMD can be formulated.

Abstract: We present a micromechanical model for polycrystalline shape-memory alloys which is capable of reproducing important aspects of the material behavior such as pseudoelasticity, pseudoplasticity, tensionÃquotesinglbaseÂ--compression asymmetry and the influence of texture inhomogeneities which may occur from the production process of components or specimens. Our model is based on the optimization of the materialÃquotesinglbaseÂtextquoterights free energy density and uses a dissipation ansatz which is homogeneous of first order. Considering the full anisotropic material properties of both the austenite and the martensite phase, we compute the evolution of the orientation distributions of austenite and martensite as internal variables of our model.

Abstract: We consider microstructures which are not inherent to the material but occur as a result of deformation or other physical processes. Examples are martensitic twin-structures or dislocation walls in single crystals and microcrack-fields in solids. An interesting feature of all those microstructures is, that they tend to form similar spatial patterns, which hints at a universal underlying mechanism. For purely elastic materials this mechanism has been identified as minimisation of global energy. For non-quasiconvex potentials the minimisers are not anymore continuous deformation fields, but small-scale fluctuations related to probability distributions of deformation gradients, so-called Young measures. These small scale fluctuations correspond exactly to the observed microstructures of the material. The particular features of those, like orientation or volume fractions, can now be calculated via so-called relaxed potentials. We develop a variational framework which allows to extend these concepts to inelastic materials. Central to this framework will be a Lagrange functional consisting of the sum of elastic power and dissipation due to change of the internal state of the material. We will obtain time-evolution equations for the probability-distributions mentioned above. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the formalism we will show an application to crystal plasticity.

Abstract: A frequent observation in materials showing martensitic phase transformations is the formation of twins. Considering monocrystalline shape memory alloys, analytical results are known stating which martensitic variants are capable of forming an unstrained interface with each other. Based on these results, an estimate of the elastic energy of the material is formulated. By global optimization, microstructural parameters such as the orientation and the composition of the martensitic twins are determined.

Abstract: This contribution generally aims at the application of the multiscale-FEM to problems arising from inhomogeneities of arbitrary shape within a solid matrix material. In the context of our work, the inhomogeneity represents a nucleus of a new solid phase. According to the theory of homogeneous nucleation, the model predicts whether it is energetically preferable to initiate the growth of the nucleus or not. The implementation of this procedure into a micromechanical model for shape-memory alloys is assumed to be suitable to reconstruct the so-called stress-drop after the initiation of phase-transformation as observed in experiments.

Abstract: Modeling the energetic behavior of martensitic (phase transforming) materials usually leads to non quasiconvex energy formulations. For this reason, researchers often employ quasiconvex relaxation methods to improve the character of the formulation. Unfortunately, explicit expressions for the relaxed free energy density for multi-variant martensitic materials are typically not available. Thus, some researchers have employed a Reu?-like convex lower bound, which neglects compatibility constraints, as an estimate on the free energy of mixing. To be confident with such a technique, one needs a measure of the quality of the lower bound. In this paper, we seek such a measure by comparing the Reu?-like lower bound to an upper bound. The upper bound is constructed upon assumptions on the type of microstructures that form in such alloys. In particular, we consider lamination type microstructures which form by temperature- or stress-induced transformation in monoclinic and orthorhombic Copper-based alloys with cubic austenitic symmetry. Our results display a striking congruence of upper and lower bounds in the most relevant cases.

Abstract: Modeling the energetic behavior of materials showing martensitic phase transformations usually leads to non-convex energy formulations. In a variety of models based on quasi-convex analysis, the ReuÃ$f$Ÿ lower bound, which neglects the compatibility constraint for the deformation fluctuations, is used as an estimate for the so-called energy of mixing.
We present an upper bound that is on the one hand based on the lamination mixture formula, which gives an estimate of the free energy of two-variant materials and is extended to a specialized n-variant case in our work. On the other hand, we rely on experimentally well established assumptions about the type of microstructure that forms in such alloys. More precisely, we restrict the set of physically admissible microstructures to the subset of second order laminated microstructres consisting of austenite and twinned martensites. We further refine our upper bound by taking into account the notion of twin-compatibility.
For the physically relevant examples of 13- and 7-variant Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys, striking congruence is obtained in the comparison of the ReuÃ$f$Ÿ lower and our upper bound for fixed volume fractions. Furthermore, we show results of global minimization of the energy obtained by each bound over the volume fractions of the variants. Similarities and differences in the energy-minimizing volume fractions are discussed.

Abstract: In damage mechanics it is well-known that localization zones are often precursors of macro-cracks. Correspondingly, in fracture mechanics extended experimental investigations (e.g. Klemm and Kalthoff, 1984; Bertram and Kalthoff, 2003) have shown that at the tip of a crack there is no stress singularity, instead, in front of the crack a small process zone can be observed caused by intensive dislocation motion in the case of ductile materials as metals or by intensive microcracking in the case of brittle materials as limestone or granite. At the same time high temperatures develop in the process zone. The size of the process zone depends strongly on the material properties. For glass the process zone is very small, but a very high temperature can be measured there. Another essential feature is the fact that the process zone evolves with high speed, if the crack moves with high speed.

Abstract: For a wide class of problems in continuum mechanics like those involving phase transitions or finite elastoplasticity, the governing potentials tend to be not quasiconvex. This leads to the occurrence of microstructures of in principle arbitrarily small scale, which cannot be resolved by standard discretization schemes. Their effective macroscopic properties, however, can efficiently be recovered with relaxation theory.

The paper introduces the variational framework necessary for the implementation of relaxation algorithms with emphasis on problems with internal variables in a time-incremental setting. The methods developed are based on numerical approximations to notions of generalized convexification. The focus is on the thorough analysis of numerical algorithms and their efficiency in applications to benchmark problems. An outlook to time-evolution of microstructures within the framework of relaxation theory concludes the paper.
